Structural repairs
Structural problems in a property should never be ignored. Cracks in brickwork, movement, damaged masonry and deteriorating structural timbers can all be signs that something needs attention. Some problems may be relatively straightforward to repair, while others can become considerably more serious if they are left untreated.
At MK Damp & Timber, we provide professional structural repairs services for domestic properties throughout Milton Keynes, Watford and London. We can assess the problem, identify the likely cause and advise on the most appropriate repair. Our aim is always to find a practical solution that restores the strength and stability of the affected area.
Brickwork Stitching and Crack Repair
Cracks can develop in brickwork and masonry for a number of reasons, including movement, settlement, weathering and structural deterioration. While some cracks may be cosmetic, others can indicate movement within the building and should be properly assessed.
Brickwork stitching, also known as crack stitching, is an effective method of repairing and reinforcing many types of cracked masonry. The process involves installing stainless steel helical stitching bars into the mortar joints, extending either side of the crack. The bars are then securely grouted into place, helping to reconnect the masonry and restore its structural integrity.
At MK Damp & Timber, we use the Helifix system of remedial ties and masonry reinforcement products, providing a proven solution for repairing and strengthening cracked brickwork.
Structural Timber Repairs
Timber can deteriorate for a number of reasons, including prolonged exposure to moisture, damp conditions and fungal decay. Rotten or weakened structural timbers can eventually affect the stability of floors, roofs and other parts of a building.
Where structural timber has been damaged, we can assess the extent of the problem and advise on the most suitable method of repair or replacement. Early attention can often prevent a relatively small defect from developing into a much larger and more expensive problem.
For properties affected by wet rot or dry rot, we also provide specialist treatment to deal with the underlying timber decay and help prevent further deterioration.
I-Beam and RSJ Fitting & Removal
Steel I-beams and RSJs are commonly used when structural walls are removed or altered, helping to support the weight of the building above. Installing or removing a structural steel beam is a specialist job and needs to be carried out carefully to ensure the building remains properly supported throughout the work.
We can undertake I-beam and RSJ fitting and removal as part of wider structural alteration and repair work. This can include the installation of temporary supports, removal of existing structural steelwork and fitting replacement beams where required. All structural work should be properly assessed and designed before work begins, with the necessary calculations and approvals obtained where applicable.
Professional Structural Repairs
Structural defects can sometimes be difficult to assess just by looking at them. That’s why getting the right advice before carrying out repairs is important. Treating the visible crack without addressing the underlying cause may only result in the problem returning.
We’ve carried out structural and masonry repairs on properties throughout Milton Keynes, Watford and North London. If you’ve noticed cracks, movement, damaged brickwork or concerns about structural timbers, get in touch with MK Damp & Timber. We can discuss the problem with you, arrange an assessment where appropriate and advise you on the best way forward.
